Everything above head height collects dust, and nothing in a normal cleaning routine reaches it. Eventually it comes down on your floor, your stock, and your air.
Why it is worth doing
Dust does not stay up there. It builds until something disturbs it, then it lands, and it lands on whatever is directly below. If you have ever wondered why a floor cleaned last night already looks dull, or why a spotless facility has a film on the top of every box, this is usually the answer.
There are harder-nosed reasons too. Accumulation on sprinkler heads affects how they respond. Dust on light fixtures measurably cuts the light they put out, so you are paying to run lamps at a fraction of their output. In food and pharmaceutical facilities it is an inspection item outright.
In woodworking and milling operations it is a genuine fire consideration, and that is not a job for a ladder and a broom.

How it works around you
We capture rather than scatter wherever we can, using extension tools and vacuum attachments instead of knocking dust loose and leaving it to settle. Some of it always comes down, though, which is why high dusting goes first if a floor service is booked with it. Cleaning the floor and then dusting the ceiling above it is work done twice.
Stock and machinery below the work area want covering or moving. We will tell you what needs protecting when we walk it, and it is usually less than people expect.
